What Is Blackjack?

Blackjack — also known as 21 — is one of the most popular casino card games in the world, and for good reason: when played with basic strategy, it offers one of the lowest house edges of any casino game. The goal is simple: beat the dealer by getting a hand value closer to 21 without going over.

Card Values in Blackjack

  • Number cards (2–10): Face value.
  • Face cards (Jack, Queen, King): Worth 10 points each.
  • Ace: Worth 1 or 11, whichever benefits the hand.

A Blackjack is an Ace plus any 10-value card dealt as the first two cards — it typically pays 3:2.

How a Round of Blackjack Plays Out

  1. Players place their bets.
  2. The dealer deals two cards to each player and two to themselves (one card face up, one face down).
  3. Players act on their hands using the available options.
  4. The dealer reveals their hidden card and must draw until they reach 17 or higher.
  5. Hands closer to 21 than the dealer win; hands over 21 ("bust") lose.

Player Options Explained

  • Hit: Take another card.
  • Stand: Keep your current hand and end your turn.
  • Double Down: Double your bet and receive exactly one more card.
  • Split: If dealt two cards of the same value, split them into two separate hands (each requiring an equal additional bet).
  • Surrender: Give up your hand and recover half your bet (not available at all tables).
  • Insurance: A side bet offered when the dealer shows an Ace. Generally considered an unfavorable bet for most players.

Basic Strategy: The Key Decisions

Basic strategy is a mathematically derived set of rules that tells you the statistically best action for every possible hand against every dealer upcard. It won't guarantee wins, but it significantly reduces the house edge.

Soft Hands (Ace Counted as 11)

  • Soft 13–15 (A+2 to A+4): Hit against dealer 2–4; Double Down against 5–6; Hit otherwise.
  • Soft 16–18 (A+5 to A+7): Double Down against dealer 3–6; Stand on Soft 18 vs. 2, 7, 8; Hit otherwise.
  • Soft 19+ (A+8 or better): Always Stand.

Splitting Pairs

  • Always split: Aces and 8s.
  • Never split: 10s and 5s.
  • Split 2s, 3s, 7s: Against dealer 2–7.
  • Split 6s: Against dealer 2–6.
  • Split 9s: Against dealer 2–6 and 8–9.

How Basic Strategy Affects the House Edge

In a standard multi-deck game with favorable rules, the house edge can drop to below 0.5% when you play perfect basic strategy. Without it, the house edge can climb to 2–4% or more. That's a significant difference over time.

Practice Before You Play

Most online casinos offer free-play demo versions of blackjack. Use them to practice your decision-making before wagering real money. The goal is to make basic strategy decisions automatically, without hesitation.
